Kabul on State is really really really good afghan food
Vientienne on Gorham just north of State street by the Plaza may look like a trailer house but they have good, spicy thai food, the wait staff can be horrible but the food is good homemade stuff

A blog relevant to this thread that people interested in local restaurants might enjoy: Madison A to Z--a couple that is eating their way through every restaurant in Madison, alphabetically. (They just did Monty's today, so if the place you're looking at starts with a letter before M they'll have a little writeup.) I like their writing and generally agree with their opinions. Also it's nice to see what regular people have to say about a place that aren't either being paid by the restaurant or by the competition.

I always thought that Husnus or Maza had the best Middle Eastern food on State St. Kabul's meat has always seemed a bit tough to me. My favorite restaurants have always been Bluephies, the new Flat Top Grill, Mi Cocina, and a few others I can't remember. I was only there for 5 years for university so I didn't get to see everything.

Frida on State St. has awesome Mexican food. It's not authentic Mexican, it's contemporary. But the pork tacos with grilled pineapple was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

So many great places in Madison. I moved away about 5 years ago, but I still long for...
The Great Dane...chicken pot pie. Mmmmm.
Vientiane...previous poster was right. Terrible service, awesome food.
Quivey's Grove...great fish fry and awesome curds.

I agree with everyone who listed the Great Dane.
I'd add the Weary Traveler on Williamson St. as a great pub with good food (and vegan friendly dishes to boot!)
And Chautara on State Street is my very most favorite place in town. Their food is EXCELLENT.

I think Maza is my fave Madison restaurant, awesome food, great prices. Dohban is somewhat similar; a little fancier though (it's a great "date" place). Monty's Blue Plate Diner is awesome, very vegetarian friendly. Of course the Magnus, which is a more upscale South American themed place right downtown.

It depends on what you're looking for. The Great Dane is a wonderful biergarten/gastro pub type place. I like the one downtown more than the one on Fish Hatchery Rd.
Capitol Brewery has consistently had the best beer.
The best steak I've ever had was at the Tornado Room, but I've only eaten there once.
Never liked any of the Jamaican themed restaurants.
The Food Fight restaurants seem to always find a good mix of quality food and nice atmosphere, and they've obviously had a lot of success.
