I think the best idea is to walk down state street and find a restaurant you like and get it to go. Walk over to the union and sit there to enjoy your meal right off of the lake. There are a TON of different style restaurants you can go to close to the Union. There is hardly a view that can beat what the Union offers. After lunch I would advise you to go inside and get some babcock ice cream.

Thanks Badger, good idea. I thought with the lake, there would be restaraunts on the water, but I have yet to find one.

Try the terrace at the Memorial Union at the lower end of State Street for a casual outdoor lunch.

For a fancier indoor setting, try the restaurant at the Edgewater Hotel at 666 Wisconsin Avenue.

For Italian food, try Paisan's in their new location, overlooking Lake Monona. They have an outdoor terrace also.

For an architectural setting, try the restaurant at the Monona Terrace Convention Center.

Head up to Waunakee and have lunch at the Nauti-Gal overlooking the northern end of Lake Mendota.

Or if you really, really want to get up close and personal with the lake, call the Betty Lou lake cruise lines and make a reservation for a luncheon cruise on one of the lakes.

In addition to the other recommendations, which were great by the way (L'etoile, Magnus, Sardine, ect). Cafe Continental is also nice. Great food and an upscale feel. Locally grown, I know that L'etoile and the Old Fashioned (both on Pinckney) do.

For lake view you cannot go wrong with Sardine.
