hotels in Madison?
Hey I'm visiting my beloved alma matter town, Madison, in mid August to gorge on Leinies, brats, frozen custard and Plaza burgers, and I expect to expand my waistline at least five inches. Anyone recommend a moderately-priced hotel in/around the Isthmus area or maybe westward? I recall a small hotel on University / Walnut St., but can't recall the name. Anyhoo, any recommendations appreciated. Go Bucky!

I was there a couple of weeks ago and stayed at the Best Western on University, just south of the UW campus. It was an average hotel, nothing spectacular.

You're traveling there to meet with someone about doing business with or attending grad school at the UW, right?
Here's another option for Lodging that's a block from the Union Terrace.

Hey thanks all. And yes, Bowie, I think I have some business to do with the UW [wink, wink].

If you're a member of the UW Union, you can stay at the Union for about $80 a night. Given what a hotel might otherwise cost you, it might be worth your while to buy a yearly membership ($50) to be able to stay there, especially if you're planning to be there for 3 or more nights. Details here.
I've also stayed at University Inn right where Francis Street dead-ends at State, literally right next to State Street Brats. It's a cheap hotel (for downtown anyway) and you get what you pay for (not much), but if you just need a place to rest your head in between days and nights on the town and don't plan to spend much time at the hotel itself, it's hard to be for price and convenience.

Make that hard to beat for price and convenience.
And after taking a second look at the UW Union page, it looks like you may not actually need to be a member of the union to stay there; you'd just get a discount if you were. Call them and check it out... and I'll have to do the same the next time I plan to stay in Madtown for a couple nights.
