Let me first say that the people on this forum seem to be very helpful. Reading through everyone's comments and advice has helped convince me Madison is where I want to move after I graduate from Grinnell College in Iowa.

My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to Madison, getting married, and basically starting our "real lives" probably a bit too soon, but that's that.

I have a number of questions, but one of primary interest has to do with the availability of land and acreage near Madison.

Is it possible to buy any sized piece of land near Madison, no further than say 15 - 20 miles away. I am interested in building an experimental home as close to the center of Madison as practically feasible. I am also interested in owning livestock, but know nothing about Madison's zoning rules.

If anyone has any advice, or, you know, wants to sell off some of their soy acreage...both would be highly appreciated.

To add practical plan to practical plan, I'm also intending on being a painter. I have heard good things about Madison's art scene and I think their geographic location is within good reach of other larger scenes. Does anyone have any experience in the art community in Madison they would be willing to share?

I (we) look forward to hearing from you, thanks so much.

15 to 20 miles away you will no longer be in Madison so the zoning laws will be different. You want to find land zoned for agricultural use. Check out wisconsinhomes.com.

You didn't specify a price range, but land like that within 15-20 miles from Madison is going to be expensive because it is seen as a luxury - the pressure to develop land for housing is just huge. That said I would look into the Mount Horeb area. Absolutely gorgeous and a nice community. The far side of Sun Prairie may be a little less expensive.

Madison does have a great art scene.

You might not be able to fulfill all of your dreams right away, but you will love it here just the same. It sounds like a good fit for you based on your posts.
