Um, you are big time wrong about that. I lived in Stoughton for a while in the late 70s/early 80s, and was a regular of the A&W. My high-school student babysitter worked there, and would bring malts to us after work. It was right where Main Street sort of ends and becomes 51 at that old shopping plaza. The A&W sign is still there in its oval form, but now has a different restaurant name on it. That Dollar General used to be the main grocery store in town (Eagle) before they closed that one and built a new eagle out across from the bowling alley. Now that one is closed as well, I believe. I don't know when the A&W closed, but it was there in the mid 80s--which would have been the last time I went there.

I guess I should not have put "never was" in my sentence....hence making me "big time wrong".....whatever that is. Then again, I don't troll the forum posts looking for errors to correct either.

There's no need to start a flame war. Let's just agree that the fact about the A&W in your post was probably wrong and move on, rather than debating the degree of wrongness.
Unless someone else can confirm the non-existence of an A&W at any point in Stoughton, let's now return to offering opinions and observations about living in Stoughton.

Well it's hard to confirm a negative, but LK and I clearly remember it being there once upon a time, as late as the mid-90s when I lived in the area, in what is now the Sunrise Cafe or something like that.

I can also confirm there used to be an A&W, as we saw the defunct building and sign, while passing through several years ago.

I grew up in Stoughton and haven't been "home" for any length of time in 20 years. I have GREAT memories of what it was and while it's changed tremendously, I did have a chance to drive through last summer and the small town feel is still there. If I could get used to the cold again (ummmmm...not really sure that's going to happen), I would move back to Stoughton.
I worked for the summer at Chose's A&W in 1977. It was there and it was real and I really was a carhop in those awful brown & orange polyester uniforms. ::ugh::

Moderator cut: argumentative
Does anyone else remember the old Eagle store at that shopping plaza? Not the new Eagle (now something else) out by the bowling alley and McDonalds, but the old one? I used to ride my bike there from Hilcrest Road to buy gum, baseball cards, or a soda. It had a "talking" Coke machine in the early 80s, which was a huge deal technological marvel to us at the time (I was probably eight or nine).
Other Stoughton memories:
The "mud hole". What the heck was up with that disgusting swimming hole? Is it still there?
"Nauga-hide" sledding down the hill at Yahara elementary (the new addition sort of blocks this off)
The pre-restored city hall before they put the clock tower back on the top. It used to look more like a castle tower, and many of the windows were boarded up for years.
Fasdahl's Bakery (not sure how to spell it).
The ugly black and white zebra paint job on the train depot.
The Stoughton High School Powder Puff football game.
The "dime store".

Reason: I said in #13 to drop the argument and I meant it.

You may have made a decision about Stoughton by now. The schools are very good. Yes, downtown is a lot of fun for a casual day of shopping, food & drink, and much more. Some of the storefronts are not being maintained, and the city is declining a bit in population.
An earlier comment indicated you can find the best home for the money in Stoughton. You still get what you pay for. Most of the "new" homes are speculative homes, and the prices are higher than they are worth.
While Middleton is a long way from Stoughton, most of the greater Madison area population is moving to the west of Madison.
