Hi there, we're moving to the area with our two children, and trying to decide on the best area to move to. We've heard great things about the schools in waunakee and middleton, my husband will be working on the east side. Any other areas we should consider with great schools, not too far from shopping, etc, and nice family-friendly neighborhoods?

The far west side of Madison would meet your needs.

Middleton and the far west side would probably make life miserable for your husband in terms of commuting to the east side. Waunakee might be a better bet. There's also a subdivision off Hwy113 on the way to Waunakee, near Bishop's Bay, but the name escapes me. Not sure of the school districts there though.

We were thinking of blackhawk subdivision - good middleton schools but also close to shopping/downtown, and hopefully enough school age kids so mine would make friends easily. What do you think? Seems like Waunakee is far from downtown and shopping.

It's a nice subdivision, Middleton schools are very good, Waunakee elementary/middle schools are excellent too. Waunakee is 14 minutes from East Town and West Town--equal distance, but it would make your spouse's commute much more tolerable. The subdivision off Highway Q is called North Lake and that would be a good compromise because it allows your husband to travel to the east side much easier than blackhawk and you're still in middleton schools.

When I mapquest it, though it seems like North Lake is farther than blackhawk to the east side, no?
