Move to Madison??
Can anyone give me some insight on moving to Madison? My husband and I are from the midwest but have been living in Portland, OR for the past 5 years. We love it on the West coast because of the nature and the local beer/wine, but would like to be closer to family. We hate the sticky summers and freezing winters in the midwest and need some more incentive to move back. Can you help??

If you Hate "Sticky" summers, and Hate freezing weather---I hate to tell ya.......but Madison might not be the right choice . Other than that, Madison has been reffered to as "The Paris Of The Midwest". It is a Wonderful city. Vibrant, Alive, Liberal, diverse, dynamic. Lots of employment opportunities, recreation galore, affordable homes. Wisconsin Does have high taxes. Colder for sure than Portland, but not as wet.

One thing working in Madison's favor is that it's at the center of a very strong beer culture. The following craft breweries serve Madison as their primary market: New Glarus, Lake Louie, Capital, Ale Asylum, Furthermore, Gray Brewing Co., Great Dane (very high quality brewpub), J.T. Whitney's (OK brewpub). Wisconsin craft breweries that serve Madison as a secondary or terciary market include Sprecher, Lakefront, Central Waters and Tyranena. Other Wisconsin craft breweries that are sporadically distributed in the Madison market include Viking, South Shore, Falls Brewing Co., and Wisconsin Brewing Co./Pioneer/Sand Creek (three breweries that merged). Respected Wisconsin-based mass brewers with heavy distribution in Madison include Point, Leinenkugels and Joseph Huber (best known for their Berghoff line). Brewpubs within a 30-minute drive of Madison include Moosejaw, Grumpy Troll and Brewery Creek Inn.
Additionally, a solid list of Wisconsin wineries can be found at http://www.wiswine.com/Members.cfm I'm particularly fond of the fruit wines from Three Lakes and the conventional wines from Wollersheim.
Finally, while Wisconsin does not have the mountainous terrain of Oregon, there are plenty of great outdoor recreational opportunities, especially in the Northwoods.
Hope this will help influence your decision.

Every city claims to be "Paris of the Midwest."
Has anyone been to Paris? It stinks, smells!
[I mean the one in France; I dunno about the one in Illinois]

M TYPE X, I think you'd better take another visit to Paris. By my lights, it's very clean now and very beautiful. The only 'smelly' thing about it is the cigarette smoke (a problem in many US cities) but, if the recent smoking ban takes effect I can't tell what you'd have to sniff at in Paris.
