Smile area recommendations near to Truax Field?

Hello! My husband is seriously considering applying for a job that would be located at Truax Field. Can you recommend some good towns/areas/neighborhoods to live that aren't too long of a commute to Truax Field? I understand if you go just ten miles north to De Forest that homes and property taxes are less than in Madison proper. Is that correct? How about other areas? We are a mid-30's couple with one 3 1/2 year old and a child on the way. Thank you!

we actually just moved south from Deforest. Lived there for 7 years, Windsor the previous 15 ( same school district ). We did like it there, it was the Wi weather that finally drove us out. Our daughter went thru this district for all her schooling, and we had no 'problems' in either community. But there are plenty of homes for sale ( like many other loctions ), you're 15 mins from the mall/shopping/eating areas in Madison, 15 mins from the lake, and maybe 25 from downtown Madison ( I'd recommend the farmer's market in summer at the capital square--take your child in the capital building--even for a young one it's quite impressive ). I won't say if taxes and homes are cheaper then in Madison as we never considered living there. But we wanted to be out of the "city" to raise our girl but stay close for ammenities. Which is what we had living up there.
good luck

Thank you, ranger17, for the info. I greatly appreciate it. My hubby has decided to not apply for the job at Truax Field because upon closer examination the job is not what we thought it to be. However, all this info is still great because that area is not out of the picture for us -- as long as a job opens up there for him to apply for.

I fully understand the issue of Wisconsin weather. The winters are the biggest issue that have kept us from making this leap years ago, and it is esp. an issue for my hubby. We shall see what happens.

Thanks again!
