Autumn? Sept? Oct? When is the best tree viewing to be had?
Our friends are planning a trip to see the trees in full change this Autumn in Madison...what dates would you recommend them to visit?

it can actually vary some due to the weather at the time, as well as the area of the state you want to visit ( normally change comes first in the northwoods, then moves south ). I would say well into later Sept at earliest in the north, most likely early to mid Oct rest of state. Guess all the years i lived in WI I never really paid attn to the calendar; just waited for the annual updates on the weather stations, and hit the road.
If you want to make a weekend out of it, a drive north or over to Door County at the right time would give some wonderful views. If you'd like to stay closer to Mad, then i'd suggest hiking thru Devils Lake state park ( the scenery from the tops of those trails is awesome in fall ) or even head west over to Spring Green/Dodgeville area for "House on the Rock" or Governor Dodge state park. Both locations an easy drive from your new home.
I may even suggest a day at Gov Dodge park, then finish with a play at "APT" in Spring Green ( outdoor theater, a beautiful site and very entertaining ). They usually run into Oct as well.

never said WI wasn't a great place to visit, or even live if one can handle the winter. We just aren't winter people...... but i think you will end up with many good suggestions of things to do and places to go up there.
I can say though that the APT really does put on some great shows, and being outside like that really adds to the overall ambiance. Worth at least checking them out.

APT == American Players Theater I've never been to one, but I hear their productions are fabulous.

we went at least once a year for the past few years ( note--bug spray in summer!! ). They offer everything from drama to comedy, with excellent performances. They should have a site that can give you much more info then I can.
Enjoy!
