Default Another Madison area apartment thread

Hey all, I'm new here as I may be transferring to a different position within my company.

I live in Oshkosh, WI now and would be working at the Dane County Airport so I'm wondering if anyone has any reccomendations of apartments near the airport. I'd prefer to stay away from the campus area completely and be in a quiet area. I realize airports are usually noisy areas, but after working at JFK for 5 years I'm used to it.

I'd prefer to go as cheap as possible as it would only be a year long assignment at the most, and I'd be leaving every weekend anyways so luxury isn't really a necessity.

I'd prefer to stay under $600/ month or so. Seems like that's about the avg for a 1 bedroom.

Any suggestions are much appreciated - thanks!

Be very careful about where you look for an apartment. The area around the airport is not that hot and it is also very close to Madison Area Technical College which means you would have another student population to avoid.

Don't get an apartment in the Packers/Northport/Warner Park area. The rent is cheap around there, but it's for a reason.... Lots of low income, subsidized housing.

MATC is a big school, so there's going to be more students there than you might suspect. And one of the problems with low income subsidized housing is that many of them are troublemakers that were displaced when some brainiac thought that moving people out from Allied Drive would break up the crime. Instead there's crime and shootings all over town now, especially on the far south west side, and Aberg Ave on the north east side is starting to have problems.

I don't know how many apartments there are on the extreme northeast part of town, but if you want quiet I would look around Cherokee Park or the residential area on the Waunakee side.

Well the thing is if you are streetsmart in the least and have lived in bigger cities, the Northport area may be a walk in the park to you. You said it's only for a year and that you won't be home much. I would recommend you find an agent who deals with rentals and ask them to find you a good complex that would meet your needs.

Good luck!

Madison's 'bad' isn't all that bad, so if you're not going to do anything but eat and sleep at your place, I'm sure whatever you find will suit the bill. There's a lot of apartments across/near East Towne Mall/East Washington Ave--along Portage Road, or Hayes Road. Here's a few that I can thnk of: Village Green East - Munz Corporation - Apartments in Madison, Wisconsin. That's not very far from the airport, and an OK area, reasonable prices for what you get, etc.

If you have a few apartments in mind, why don't you post them, and maybe we can respond specifically to that?

Good luck!

Thanks for your help! We've decided to stay put here in NY for now. We had some remodeling done on our apartment and I was considering renting it out to live closer to family in the Fox Valley, but we're so happy with the "new" place we decided to stay here.

It was an interesting trip as I had a warning light come on in the car, and there was no dealer in the area or even the state to take it too..lol

The UW campus is pretty nice. Definately a lot going on. And, you guys seem to have the cheapest drink prices in the country... I had a Long Island at some bar that was like $5. Here, for a drink that size, and with that amount of liquor, you'd be looking at $10 for something half of that size...lol
