This is about the comment, "There don't seem to be any in Madison." The comment was a complaint about lack of bars, taverns, and lakeside activities in Madison, Wisconsin. In my opinion, this comment is one of the most bizarre and incorrect comments ever published in the English language. I respectfully submit that The Rathskellar in The Memorial Union is considered by archaeologists, theologians, and historians, to be the holiest of holy shrines on the planet Earth, and to be the exact site where life on Earth first materialized. Also note the glorious murals on the walls inside the Rathskellar, and the free movies and live bands in Rathskellar. The Rathskellar and the nearby terrace is one of the most (if not the most) glorious places on Earth to pound down a liter of dark beer on tap. While engaged in this noble activity, one can do the chit-chat thing with friends, or one can sit outside and watch dramatic lightning bolts come hurling down from the heavens during a summer thunderstorm, and one can rent a sailboat or rent a canoe and navigate Lake Mendota, or one can sit inside in the winter and watch the ice boats go whizzing by and also watch the ice fisherman. On the other side of the lake, at Yahara River, are places to rent boats, and also a couple of reataurants and lakeside bars. Also, note the friendly crowds at the farmers market on capitol square, in spring, summer, autumn. Truly, Madison is the most magical of magical places in the United States. --Tom Brody, PhD, employee at U.W. Madison (1980-1984)

Great question!

When you exclude State Street and the Capitol/campus area, this city seriously lacks in bars/taverns.

It’s relatively small, and there’s this crazy concept called ‘zoning’ LOL

Only an alcoholic thinks there aren’t enough spots to drink in Madison

So is Milwaukee chock full of nothing but alcoholics, then? Color me perplexed!

Madison and Milwaukee are different places. Cities of different character with different histories. No big surprise that Brew City has more ‘corner taverns’ being larger and a predominantly working class rust belt city. Madison is white collar and more suburban-like with chains/restaurants. No similarly large historical swaths of neighborhoods where residents worked manufacturing or industrial jobs.

Why would you need a cluster of 5-10 bars to be located in proximity to a quiet suburban-like Madison neighborhood when you are so relatively close to places near campus/downtown, or what’s already on the east/west sides(?)

...because the parks ninnies would have a fit. Also NIMBY's like to hide behind "zoning" as a convenient excuse. In this state you cannot bulldoze a single wetland or mud without some environmental group losing it's mind over a garter snake relocation.

Well wetlands shouldn't be bulldozed or developed at all. And snake relocations rarely work well, including Butlers.

Really, no wetlands? Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Racine, Monona, Shorewood Hills were all wetlands at one point. Fill it in and build baby build!!!
