Madison area?
My wife and I are considering a move from Orange County, CA to Wisconsin
(been in CA 20 years). Question: What are some of the best Madison suburbs for a couple of fifty year-old, soon to be empty-nested, liberal-leaning former midwesterners who've accumulated enough $$ to get a nice home in a nice area? We currently live in a development that has little or no "town" feel (one of those "suburbs in search of a city") and would like to get back to a midsized city near a lake.
Thanks!

If you want suburban life that's not far from water, it sounds like you'd be happiest on the west side of Madison or in Verona.
Madison has 4 lakes within or next to its boundaries.

I would say Verona... It still does have that small town feel and has a main street like a small town with all the locally owned shops and businesses. There are plenty of great developments and subdivisions in Verona... Or you could try Oregon, they have some nice subdivisions as well and small town feel. I don't know what you mean by nice house tho, if you mean 3000+ sq ft executive features that kind of thing, you'll probably more or less find that in the subdivisions. Middleton is pretty good too with many nice house and was voted the best place to live in 07 or 08 I forget which one. They have kind of a main street area and some get that small town feel there...

I'd vote for Middleton. Verona is nice, too.

Fitchburg. It's good enough for Barry Alvarez and Bret Bielema.

Who is Brett Bielema (non-sports fan here...)? Which brings up a related question. What is Matt LaPav (sp?) known for? Pretty sure it has something to do with sports, but not sure what.

Bret is the UW football coach that replaced Barry Alvarez. Matt LePay is the Badgers' football and men's basketball radio announcer.

We moved here from there last month...I see you're in Trabuco Canyon...Rancho Del Cielo? Dove Canyon? Modjeska? Coto? Either way, if you want the same "style" of living, you want downtown Middleton. You will feel like you're back in the OC, along with similar people! Verona and Fitchburg would feel even more detached from the city for you...and further from the lakes. East side you'd compare to 1970s LA...and west side, well...similar to 1980s Mission Viejo. So there you go...Middleton, from someone with experience in this same area! :-)

madison follow up
Thanks everyone for the suggestions & info--we'll check out each of the places mentioned!
To the former OC poster...we're in Portola Hills, up against the wilderness. If and when we make the move, I won't miss the fires.
