The Flint Hills of Kansas actually have quite a bit of topography. They are located on the eastern side of the state, around the Manhattan and Junction City areas in particular.

Wow that's Kansas??? It looks like something out of Eastern Europe lol except for the lack of trees. Pretty amazing. Is that one shot of the *one* area like that, or are those hills over an extensive area?

The Flint Hills covers an area that is about 150 miles from north to south, from around Manhattan extending south to the Oklahoma border. It is roughly 50 miles in width. Pretty country that contains the Konza Prairie, which is the nations largest preserve of native tallgrass prairie remaining in existence.

I'm glad you cleared the misconception up about Kansas being all flat. My mom is from Kansas, and I was just last week in Overland Park where she lives. Believe me, there are a LOT of hills in O.P. Some parts of that city would make the Madison west side look flat. Kansas City is also a very hilly place in many parts--just try to walk it. The flint hills are beautiful, by the way.

how close is the bluff area?
How far south or west is the closest area to Madison that has more of the rolling hills/bluff country?

About 25 miles northwest of the Madison border is where you reach the Driftless Area. Below is a picture of Devil's Lake in the Sauk Prairie area (Sauk City/Prairie du Sac/Baraboo/Merrimac area):

Drover, thanks for posting the pics (great by the way) and for reminding us that "flat" isn't really "flat"! Couldn't rep you, must have sent you a comment recently! You know me, always talking!!!

This is from La Crosse, WI a few years ago when i was up hiking (October i would guess). Your looking west towards the bluffs of Minnesota and the Mississippi River is out there between me and those bluffs. I didn't jump! We don't have "mtns", we have bluffs, knobs, knolls, valleys, coulees, gullies, ridges, hollows, and you name it! This area was NOT hit by the glaciers 10,000 years ago, so it wasn't crushed like east Wisconsin (madison/MKE) its rugged and hilly. Very pretty with some very clean running streams and sexy overweight women
