Default 500k budget Plus or Minus. Where would you live in or around Madison?

Hello I am thinking of relocating. Just wondering where some of YOU would choose to live if that was the budget you were working with. Neighborhoods and why? Condo in downtown or house in the surrounding area? Any thoughts would be helpful! Thanks

^ The parade home site in Bristol this year was nice. Big lots with beautiful views and low taxes. Honestly though, I would rather move out of the state if I was playing with that chunk of change. You don't get that much for your money around here and I would like to head for more exciting, warmer, greener pastures.

I would live in Middleton Hills if I had that chunk of change. Places there start in the $400's and go up from there.

Vilas. Mostly quiet, vintage housing stock, convenient to downtown, ready access to Vilas Park, decent commercial district along Monroe.

Is the 500K a one time deal? Then you get stuck with outrageous tax bills for what you paid on a property. I would probably look for something more reasonable, keeping in mind taxes down the road.

But if this is just fantsy lol, why not Nakoma, Monroe St. area, Univerisity Heights, Shorewood, Maple Bluff...there are tons of nice areas to live in Madison.

Unfortunately it seems like nowadays when someone DOES have that kind of money, they build McMansions in the new subdivisions outside the Beltline on the far west side. Basically, just glorified subdivisions...

Why ask a question like this?
You like what you like, don't second-guess yourself.
If you truly have no clue(doubt that) it doesn't matter.

So, uh, if you had a 500K budget, where would you live in the Madison area?

No, I dislike "bubble" areas, esp. if general tone is yuppy.
I did live there at one time, if I HAD to move back, would go to farthest out bedroom towns, perhaps Sauk City.Would just as soon die as live in McMansion(well almost).

here's a question for you: where would you be relocating from?? Reason for asking, is what are you used to paying for property taxes currently. If you are used to higher tax rates, then there'd be no surprises when you see the rates on a 500k dwelling in Mdison area. If you come from a low tax region, then i'd do some homework on that end. The more info on the $$ side you are prepared for, the easier it is to then go chose a location. After all, it's really the total amount spent on a home, not just a mortgage that counts each month.
