I liked the Boulder comparison, but if he wants a free standing city, Colorado Springs would be a good option. Madison is nice, but if someone is comparing it to Denver, they really are looking for separate things (apples and oranges). Both are nice, just pick what is most improtant to you.

Jansville on the other hand has alot of child molesters. BUT that is just my opinion.
Madison, dumpy? Some parts of the north and south sides can be considered "dumpy," but for a city of 225,000 its "dumpy" neighborhoods are few and far between.

In spite of its proclivities for PC nonsense, Madison is a very nice city with great parks, nice neighborhoods, good people, and a very positive economy. Kids should be reasonably safe here, if they stay out of a few neighborhhods, ie Allied Drive and Badger Road.

As for Janesville, I really haven't heard a great deal about its alleged child molester population.
