Removing the bands could be hazardous to your appendages! I've cooked a bunch of them and never had the rubber bands impart a foul taste. I remember when the claws were kept closed with wooden pegs.

Harvard did a study on this and found there was no difference in the taste of lobsters cooked with the bands on. Yes you can smell the rubber in the cooking process but it does not taint the taste of the meat inside according to the study. (they wrote a nice fat government grant to do the study!!). I take them off because I don't like the rubber smell but feel free to leave them on.....most places that sell cooked lobster leave them on. I liked the old wooden claw plugs....anyone remember those?

I'm not quite 4,000 years old but I remember pegs. All but one man in my husband's family are lobstermen and the one who isn't now used to be. I liked pegs better. They're easier to remove from hot claws.

I prefer steaming to boiling - and never remove the rubber bands while they are alive! I have never had the rubber bands add any off flavor to the claws, which are my favorite part.

OMG, it's official that I'm older than dirt. I remember the wooden pegs too. Always wondered how they got them in there??????

Also to the OP: Be careful of the cooking time, you don't want raw, and you don't want them overcooked. Overcooked lobster is rubbery and tasteless.

That's only if you eat the rubber bands.

Get the water to a rolling boil, and put the critters in. Cover and let the water get back to a boil, then cook for 12 minutes. After the water gets back to a boil you can turn down the heat a little to keep the water at a nice steady simmer. This is for 1-1 1/2 pounders.
A tip I learned on Martha Stewart is to snip the ends of the claws after cooking and let the water drain out before serving.
Helpful hint: If you have a significant other, make him put the lobsters in....that's what I do. I also say a silent prayer of thankfulness for grocery store meat, so I do not have to slaughter my own meat, or pluck my own chickens.

We also didn't rermove the bands when we steamed lobster a few weeks ago. Didn't notice any rubbery taste....

While the claws are the best tasting meat for me, I don't eat the rubber bands and get them outta there as quickly as possible.
