I'm not a hunter (except varmints and some times in remote areas with no food) but I have no problem with those who *do* hunt. That said, a guy I work with has been talking about baiting bears. Frankly, I can't see that there is much sport or skill in it, you lure them in and get them accustomed to a food supply and shoot them?

Mind you, I'm not saying it's "wrong", I just don't comprehend the "draw" to it.

Not against hunting them certainly, but never wanted to eat one, so never shot one. My grandmother used to make stew out of the meat, but I've heard it's pretty tough unless prepared properly.

Oftentimes, that is the only way you will find a bear. As others have posted, most black bears are afraid of humans - unless, that is, they've decided that a human poses no danger - not good IMO. They're very good at hiding quietly. It is more than likely that many a hiker have been closely watched by a black bear while in the woods, but never had clue one of it.

Many years ago we had a couple of bears out behind the woods of my house. One day, while riding my horse through tall and grassy field, I noticed something walking parallel with us less than 3 feet beside us through the hay. It was a small black bear.

Fortunately, my horse wasn't one to freak. We just kept plodding along quietly until he or she veered off in the other direction.

Ground swiping with a 20 guage #6 shot full choke in the head only. Shooting for the meat I prefer having the bird intact. Too many times partridge get blown apart to the point of uselessness on the wing.
Besides I might spill my beer if I have to get out of the truck.

As previously pointed out without dogs or baiting you have very little chance of seeing a bear to shoot in most of Maine. There are exceptions where bear populations seem to thrive. I've never hunted for bear as I do not like the meat. I do understand they need controlling and if a guide can make a living guiding sports to a bait station I'm all for it.

I would if I used a 20. I use the 12 now with #4 or #6. I like to take the bunnies while I'm out to. My friend was plinking them in the head with a .17 pretty regularly last season.

Every town used to have a pretty good population of dump bears. Then the state made us close down those natural biodegradable sites and encapsulate the leftovers. The bears, accustomed to human discards went to people's homes where the scent was so similar and raided the trash cans. Dump bears were always a good tourist attraction. They were unafraid of camera flashes.

Bears are nocturnal animals by nature. That's why we see so few in the daytime. I have never shot a bear and don't intend to unless provoked. I have, however, eaten bear pot roast and the leftovers make great sandwiches.

We make kind of a contest out of it. The person who gets the most pellets in a breast has to clean all the birds for they whole day! That's why I like the full choke. My buddy shoots a modified choke.....he cleans alot of birds! I have that single 20 down pretty well. I've taken hundreds of birds with it over the years and ruined very few......lost some but rarely shoot 'em up badly.

Gotta be careful getting out of the vehicle, don't you have a cup holder?

We saw a black bear crossing the road near our home a few weeks ago.

Sometimes a neighbor hear asks to hunt bear on my land, I hope he goes bear hunting this year, we could do with some more bear meat
