We had a big regional meeting at work today, and I found out that one of the people there is originally from Fort Kent, ME (lives in Princeton, NJ now). I didn't get a chance to ask her what it's like there, but I'm fascinated since it's about as far north as you can get in the lower 48. I may being coming up to Maine this winter to go all over the state, and I'd definitely be interested in checking the town out.

So, what is life like there? What do people do?

It's a really nice little town, but there isn't all that much there to do. The University is the big thing in town. Lots of French-speaking people there as well. If you are in the vicinity though you could do worse than to check it out.

Snowmobiling is huge. Rent a machine and go with a group on the trails. The best biathalon course in North America is there. If you should move there it helps to speak French. Everybody speaks English, but the French heritage is very pronounced and much revolves around French heritage. Biathalon is cross country skiing and shooting. The Can/Am 250 is a 250 mile sled dog race held every winter around the end of February.

That's a great area. I grew up with some Daigles and Peletiers from Daigle, ME which is just outside Fort Kent. Very cool people.

I like Fort Kent. Great town. They are very outdoors-oriented, as mentioned. They have the only ski area that I know of that is right downtown (Lonesome Pines). It's not huge but it's not a bad hill. It's connected to the town-owned cross country trails as well as the 10th Mountain site of the Maine Winter Sports Center (which hosts the biathlon events). There is a World Cup biathlon event from Feb. 10-13, where you can watch Olympic-level athletes compete in one of the biggest events of the year for the sport. It's very cool! There is alot of other things to do around Fort Kent too. You can also go across to Clair, NB (right across the bridge). It's totally French there. The Can Am 250 really is a great weekend with the races plus a festival on Saturday.
I work in FK a couple days a week. Quebec City is just as close as Bangor!
