My uncle in central Maine found one for $6k furnished. It is a 2 br 2 ba single wide in good shape. He had it delivered to his property where he slowly got it all leveled, hooked up and decks built. He is tearing down his old house as it has been leaning and leaking for a while now. He brought up his whole family there and has horses with a barn too. His big claim now is that he's finally moving up from tar paper shack to trailer trash.

He lives on a complex of homes where his brother, son and nephew all have homes there too. One is the old family homestead. Another is a two story prefab home with 4 large front porch pillars overlooking the penobscot river and another house which started out as a mobile home but was added on to about triple the original size with several outbuildings.

They are all creative/inventive Mainers that do for themselves. Living off the land is something they have always done. They are vegetable farmers, trappers, hunters, carpenters, barterers and woodsmen.

I know somebody selling a fixer upper house for $12,000 in Van Buren, Maine. It's on a 100 by 100 lot that the buyer would own and is right on State Street. The home is very cozy and sturdy, however could use new flooring as it has old carpets. It could also use new paint. Taxes are really cheap in Van Buren! Work is difficult to come by if you're a professional, however frequently there are entry level jobs available (cashier, gas attendants, laborers, etc...) If you're interested I can get you the owners name and number.

RMoore...That is awesome!Sounds like they are mine and my husband's type people. What he is doing with his land is exactly what we want to do...Valley Living, good looking out on the mobile home thing, but that is a little more than we want to spend, esp. if we have to fix the floors. But I really appreciate the info. We are thinking about moving our move date to maybe late winter instead of spring. Thanks Everyone! You Rock!
