I lived in Brunswick for 3 years as a kid (just across the bridge from Bath). We spent the day in Bath probably 3 years ago now. Nice older town with some good shops and, of course, its on the coast. I've never really known much about it, so hopefully someone will see your question who actually lives there or has more experience with it.

I do know there are some really great old homes there -- really, really old homes. Beautiful!

It's okay. We only spent a couple of hours there. Honestly I preferred Brunswick. Bath was the one place in that area where I saw a fair amount of graffitti. That's always a turnoff for me.

But as I said, we weren't there for very long. I'd be very interested to hear locals' opinions.

bath is a nice coastal town along the kennebec river, and not far from popham beach,(where the kennebec river empties into the ocean) reguarded as one of the best beaches in maine.
bath has a rich maine history of old sea captains and shipbuilders(many old grand homes)
bath iron works, is the areas largest employer, as a shipbuilder.
across the bridge in bath is a town called woolwich, and further up rte 1 is wiscasset, very nice coastal towns!!

I like Bath a lot. It has a nice downtown, some wonderful neighborhoods in both the north and south ends, and there's a certain amount of diversity, thanks to the Navy, that you don't find in a lot of Maine towns. There are several very nice restaurants --- Mae's, Solo Bistro, MaryEllenz, Kennebec Tavern, the barbeque place, Maxwells. The library is a stand out. Just don't try to drive from one end of town to the other at 3:30 in the afternoon (BIW shift change). There is no place in the city where I feel unsafe, and they're finally doing something about the landfill.

I can't say anything about the schools, never used them.

Bath is an interesting little city. Most driving thru on US1 don't get to experience Bath as the road is elevated so the traffic, as a result, is not congested like some of the other towns along US1.

On the south side you have BIW with it's huge cranes and industrial building where they build military ships. The north side is the downtown and along the river they are rehabing the cannery area so that should make a nice downtown even nicer.

Screw Wal-Mart! There should be more places like Reny's.

Amen on the Reny's. I spent about two hours in the Ellsworth Remy's when I was up on vacation a few weeks ago. I just love that store. And the Christmas Tree Shop in South Portland.
