City-data lists 16 sex offenders in Pittsfield. Seems like a lot. Anyone familiar with the town?

There seem to be a lot of "sex offenders" in Maine, I think Bangor lists over a hundred. You need to check them out and see just what their records are. If I'm not mistaken, just "mooning" someone can get you charged with a "sex" crime.

That's ALMOST true. In southern lancaster county pay where I live, they publish a book for the school of the offenders. If there were just 16 listed they wouldn't need a whole book. There are hundreds. The book is 8.5 x 11 and is 3/16 of an inch thick. Its not like we're worried. That's just news media hype. 99% of offenders interact with people they know already. You have more to worry about from your brother in law than some poor offender in the book.

If you take pictures of your kid in the bath tub and send them to riteaid to be developed, you could be charged as a dangerous predator. Its happened.

Thanks guys for replying. Didn't think much about it since my children are adults. However, stats on sex offenders jumps out at you on city-data. Tend to think it says a lot about a community. Just to check differences, I went on stats for Concord, NH which I'm familiar with or thought I was and hmmmmm.

Pittsfield is a nice small town with a community movie theatre ($1 on Monday nights), a beautiful park in the middle of town, a train that runs through the center of town, and a private/public high school (MCI).

At one time my father was a minister in Pittsfield.....back then....and I bet now....it was a typical small town....with nice people and pretty residential streets. I don't think you need to worry about Pittsfield....or at least not any more than any other town or city.

Pittsfield seems to be a nice place. I would place much credence in the "lists".

Some are labeled as sex offenders when others would question why. If you have concerns, do your homework--sounds like you are doing some homework. Jessica Lunsford was a young girl who was murdered by a sex offender living in her neighborhood --her body was found 150 yards from her home. (FL). If I still had young children, I would be concerned what the labeled sex offenders had done to get the label and probably take the time to find out. I don't know if Jessica's family moved to the neighborhood before or after John Couey, the man who confessed to killing her--guess it doesn't matter now. If something like this could happen in FL, it could happen in Maine even though it makes me very sad to say it or believe it. As children, we roamed our road and woods freely without fear. (not saying predators didn't exist in Maine back then) The Maine world I grew up in seemed to be much safer than the "safe" Maine of the 21st century. I still want to believe Maine is safer than all the other states, and hopefully, that is true.

Sadly, I agree Mainegrl. We're originally from NH and now living in Nova Scotia. NS is a very amazing place. We're on the ocean and the people here are fabulous but we want to sell and return to US. Here is very much like US cities and towns were in the 50's when I was growing up. We as well, could run and play without fear. We're used to high property prices in NH and when I looked at prices in Pittsfield, I was astonished at what a lovely looking house one could buy for so little money. Consequently, I began to wonder why. Thank you for the imput everyone. Would love to read more about the area.

The reason similar homes cost so much more in NH is that there is no income tax or sales tax there which means much better economic opportunity.

Pittsfield is a nice town and it is roughly half way between Bangor and Augusta. It is convenient to I-95 and on the Moosehead Trail. There is a super WalMart and lots of gas stations which keeps gas prices low.
