The only one of it's kind in the world, the granite cribwork bridge connecting Orr's and Baliey's Islands re-opened today after an eleven million dollar repair job. The original and much of the repair work granite was quarried in Yarmouth. The bridge is made up of 5000 to 6000 pieces of granite and weighs around 10,000 tons or 20 million pounds!! The bridge was built in 1928 and lasted more than 80 years before needing repair.
The bridge is registered as a National Historic Landmark. The open cribwork design which allows the tide to pass through the bridge' support system is purported be the only one of it's kind in the world. It was designed after a bridge in Scotland which was destroyed in WW-2 by the Nazis.
The Orr's and Bailey's Island Cribwork Bridge had been closed for repair for over three years. A temporary bridge was constructed adjacent to the cribwork bridge allowing the traffic on route 24 to flow freely during the repair.
If you have never seen the cribwork bridge it's worth the trip to see it. It's most ipressive from the water or from Cooks Lobster House.

It is a pretty neat bridge. Not the most beautiful one I've seen, but I fully respect its function. Kinda interesting that guard rails weren't added until 1961. I'm guessing that folks must've driven in a more careful manner back in the olden days. I drove over it for the first time on my honeymoon back in 1976 and quite a few times since, but not in the past 3 or 4 years.

Dang - I seem to have missed a construction zone! I was pretty certain that I had hit em all.
