Smile Maine or??

Hi everyone.

My husband and I are definately relocating from New Hampshire. The areas we have looked at are Florida (cuz of the no winter. He loves winter but said he would be happy anywhere) and Old Town Maine.

I think we have decided on Old Town vacinity for two reasons, my husband is originally from that area and his family is there. I think the extended family is important for the kids. And Florida and Maine are two very different lifestyles.

So on with my questions?

I have been reading the threads and can't remember which one but in one of them Mollysmiles says that an administrative assistant would do good looking for work in Bangor.

Which type of Administrative Assistant?

Does anyone have more information. I have been looking online in the Bangor Daily News but would prefer to work for a temp agency if plausible to get a feel for different employers. However, I would want consistant jobs or assignments. Bonney Staffing seems to be the best one to go with.

Any information from anyone would be great.

I would suggest the University of Maine or the health care field. The university has a jobs page on their website.

Thanks Mark,

I have noticed a lot of work in the health care field but my experience is in a law office? I didn't think of the Unversity of Maine, thanks, I will check them out as well.

I remembered that I actually have that link bookmarked. Here it is: Employment at the University of Maine, Human Resources (broken link)

Keep in mind that this is the job page for the whole University of Maine system. Some of these jobs might not be in Orono.

Good luck!

WHY are you moving from NH to Maine ... The taxes alone will kill you ....

I'm asking because I am considering NH! Is there anything I should know about ?

We recently toured all of New England and upstate New York, looking for a new place to live. I would choose Maine over NH in a heartbeat.

Don't get me wrong. NH is a lovely state. Nice people. And yes, taxes are cheaper there. But within the next 20 years, New Hampshire will very likely be one big strip mall, with McMansions in every suburban sprawl.

Maine still has some wild places left, and many Maine towns are still real towns with a sense of community. I couldn't find that anywhere in New Hampshire.

Dear flipflop

Yea, the taxes are lower but the cost of living is not. My husband and I own a home now but it takes all of our time and money. Depending on your job, the pay isn't great either. WE do have decenet jobs but the pay levels just are not keeping up with the rise of the cost of living. New Hampshire has changed a lot in the past 5 years or so. If you travel to Boston then the pay is better. Some of the bigger cities pay better such as Manchester and Portsmouth and probably Nashua than where I am at but then you pay more for housing so it is all the same.

We pay mortgage almost the same that we would pay for a decent three bedroom apartment and things are just getting too expensive.

Don't get me wrong, NH is a beautiful state with a lot to offer. I have a house on a dirt road in the woods and it is very peaceful. The kids can go out and play without worries. I know most of the families living around me. Very traditional country living and it is very nice to watch the sunrise over the woods and less than a mile from the lake.

Just working too much to enjoy the little things in life. My husband has family in Maine also. My family is from MA and that is a state that I would never go back to with kids.

The property taxes have gotten higher as well. I am not sure how they compare to other places but they have doubled in some cities within the past 5 years as well.

NH really isn't a bad place, just growing quicker than we can keep up.

Mark S.

New Hampshire does have towns like what you are looking for. Where I live, in Wakefield, it is exactly like that. The people are really nice, the school is great, Santa comes into town at Christmas time just so the kids can sit on his lap.(and of course, they get a present) and it is a beautiful place. On the other side to have all that you have to be willing to travel for major shopping and jobs and such.

Actually Wakefield reminded us of parts of Maine and that is why we bought the house. Circumstances changed though and so off we go.

But you are right about the growth, New Hampshire is growing very quickly, and continues to do so.

There is much to be said for family. I moved to Maine from Massachusetts almost 20 years ago. I can honestly say that the only thing I miss is family. If you can come to Maine and have family, you are blessed indeed!

OMG! I almost peed myself from laughing so hard. My husband works in a construction industry field and he always calls them McMansions...LMAO!

P.S. We have more than our share of those springing up all the time in Ohio.
