Seems those companies you mentioned are trying to save money by not having qualified HR depts and hiring managers to screen potential applicants. Sounds like those same companies that would jump at a chance to save even more money by reducing benefits and lower than market rate salaries.

I wouldn't say a company is "good" if they only hire through temp agencies. If they were looking for the best employees, retain them and increase profits long term, they wouldn't exclusively hire from a temp agency. People who are at the top of their field, don't temp. I guess its ok, if your looking for employees who are good enough or adequate . I'm sure there are some diamonds out there but "only" using a temp agency is surely narrowing their field of potential applicants.
If they don't have a good HR dept. and managers to handle the posting of jobs, recruiting, screening applicants to get the best of the best etc., they are surely lacking in many other departments. I wish them luck in the future, they have a hard road ahead of them.

When coming into the job market in Maine you need to be adaptable and able to wear several hats. I knew coming here that I was making a lifestyle change. You have to be ready to change careers and do what ever needs doing. If you expect the same results in your career in Maine as in big metro areas you will become bitter fast. I did not come to Maine to further my career, I came to recreate my life beyond work. Jobs are secondary to lifestyle for many of us here. If you want to be in Maine, change your attitude and find a job (even if it is something you feel is beneath you) you may be surprised at the results.

Chin up you will find something. It may be not what you were hoping for. Dont bother trying to get a state job. They have a hiring freeze. BTW where are you located.

Minn. is right, healthcare is now going to a paperless system, and alot of the systems are experimental, and they crash alot. The ones we use, there are 3 different types, are always crashing, and they're always adding updates...and I know jack about puters except how to type and input what info I get from the doctors/patients into the system. If theres a problem we call one of our 10 IT guys...but they're usually on smoke break :P.

Yeah, they are pretty much going about it all wrong. Sounds like they are using a custom Windows Client to talk to a database or worse a proprietary database with their own windows server running on the back end. There is no reason to use a custom windows client that is crash happy because of bad coding.
Dont worry, they will figure out they did it all wrong, toss everything in the garbage, and just give you a web browser (IE or Firefox) and do all the database stuff on the server side using SQL.
