I've never actually lived in Maine, but have visited a great many times over the years. I would say the best place to live would be Ogunquit or York, as long as someone could afford the housing there; from what seen so far it is pretty expensive. Ogunquit is an exquisitely charming town with the best beach I've seen in Maine. It seems to be in a relitively economically healthy area and is near enough to Portland that a trip there is only about 45 minutes away. I think its also only about an hour and a half from Boston. If not Ogunquit, I'd imagine some of the landlocked towns west would also be nice to live in, just so you could be near Ogunquit and close enough to Portland.
My next choice would be any of the towns between Portland and Brunswick. These towns are close to the city and seem to be pretty nice.
If you don't care about living near a cool city like Portland, I would say Bar Harbor, Camden or one of the northern towns on the coast. All of these places are rediculously awesome.
Aside from these places, I've explored the other big population areas which I've never really been all that smitten with. An exception is Bangor which I think is also a pretty nice area. I've driven the back roads from Bangor to northern Vermont. Most of it was really pretty, but too isolated for my liking, (as far as living there goes.) The White Mountains are breathtaking. Also, there's this crazy town somewhere along these roads called Mexico, which has a massive power plant in the middle of town. The power plant looks like a huge lighted UFO if one is seeing it at night, for their first time, while hopped up on like 5 cups of coffee and approaching by auto.
