Maine has regained its position as number one in the nation in tax burden per capita income. We slipped back to Number 3 last year as California and New York spent more than we did on a per capita basis.

With our new governor and a new budget we can begin the long recovery to a position somewhere near the middle of tax burdens in our country. Our struggle in the face of burdensome taxes is real. It isn't just some hunch we all have. It is documented by economists who work in all all states.

We still need jobs that pay more than minimum wage if we ever want to dig out.

People can't pay taxes with nothing, and they can't work to get out of poverty if there are no jobs other than part-time "not willing to work around another job's schedule" positions.

Interestingly, I was recently sent this website. I hope it's not too far off topic to post here. I haven't had a chance to go through it point by point; however, apparently, we're dead last on Governor Salary.

Go figure.

Govs' salaries range from $1 to $206,500

We'll see economic growth over the next four years. We will no longer be #1 at the end of that time.

The Northern Maine Land Man said that on 2/12/11. Check back in 4 years for verification.

I'd love to move myself and my business to a state with no income taxes.

On ther other hand, high taxes would help to keep Maine from turning into overpopulated, overdeveloped heck hole like most of coastal U.S.

So viewed in that respect, I will think of Maine taxes as a kind of fee, which is paid to help keep 300 million more people from moving there.

OutDoorNut putting a positive spin on high taxes in Maine. Sorry, no sale.

Just let us be 10th or even 15th on that list, please. That's a start. We need businesses and people and money and investments and progress, not congress.

So CA is behind ME?! IF along high taxes would come excellent services... That doesn't really happen anywhere in this country of ours. Maybe in Scandinavia?

Just west of Maine, beyond the Maple Curtain, there is a land with no income tax and no sales tax. Last time we were Number 1, New Hampshire was Number 49. (They would have been #50, but Alaska pays people to live there.) Maine's legislature chose for us to be #1. NH's legislature chose for them to be #49.

All that said, Maine is just beginning an age of enlightenment as we emerge from 40 years of "endarkenment".
