With the kind of house the OP is looking for, you will probably just have to widen your search a little more and just sell yourself on the town when you find it. Any town around those parts is very nice if you ask me. You're quality of life should be good as their is so much to explore including the closeness of a world class city in Boston.
OOPS The ocean would definately make a differance. I think I was thinking Berwick.. Oh well....Nice points!

best of luck in your search lorilou! I think you've chosen a great area, regardless of which state you land in, and I understand the value of finding the right house.

It sounds as though you need to find a home with one or more 'guest cottages' -- perhaps buy a home and a couple of the very nice 'sheds' that are available - they're stunning.

An ongoing argument in my house is whether to retire to NH or Maine. We love both, and my husband says NH is far more economical due to income tax, sales tax etc compared to Maine. I know you all have heard that argument before. We are moving from Weymouth, MA so to me moving to either place would better than what we are paying now. NOW my question. I am on a heart transplant list, and i know my Tufts doctors work closely with Maine Medical. Bridgton Hospital is owned by Maine Medial (Tufts does their transplants), and BH has an outstanding cardiac care program. If you know of hospitals in NH that work with Tufts Medical, and have a cardiac program please let me know. I do not want to go through all the transplant testing again to be placed on a non-Tufts affiliated hospital. Can anyone help with this? I love the Knights Hill area, because it has a pool. Once you have a heart transplant you can no long swim in lakes, pond...only pools, and ocean. i had a kidney transplant almost 30 years ago at Tufts Medical, and do not want to cut my relationship with them. Thank you.

I think Bridgton ME is a nice community. I have spent time there for many years during the summer. It has a nice downtown and is a reasonable distance from Portland if you want to take advantage of theater or special events. My Dad grew up in Weymouth MA. It seems like city to me now that I have been in Maine for so long.
