Thinking of raising a half dozen goats come spring for cheese and soap. Small scale for fun and friends at first. I have read many different theories of breeds. Lamanche being prevelent for some reason. Anybody know a good place to buy goats ? Any other suggestions? Good recipe's etc....

Livestock auction yard in Skowhegan every Monday 11am until they are done. They usually have goats.

Being nearly spring, you could contact any of the cheese-maker's guild members [they are all vendors at local Farmer's Markets] and ask about their spring kidding.

I finally clicked on this link to see if there was any connection at all between goats and soap. I discovered none and shall retire from this thread for another week with one parting thought. The arrival of numerous Somalis in the Auburn Lewiston area has been very good for the goat business in Maine.

I'm presuming that you've done this already. Back in my hippie days(late 60's early 70's) I found that doing this was a lot harder than I thought it would be and simply gave up.

I wonder if this link would be helpful: Maine Cheese Guild It looks like some good information under the "connections" tab.

I'm particularly fond of the products from this farm: Garden Side Dairy « Maine Cheese Guild

Good luck!
