I think you described Camden too. Mt Battie is considered one of the prettiest views in Maine. Plus if your wife isn't in the mood for hiking the Mt you can drive up it. its still a pretty easy hike though.

I'm with Molly. The Eastport area is gorgeous. The restaurants are great and the people fabulous.

Camden is more like Bar Harbor, a very busy tourist town but has some great hiking in the area.
If to be quaint, a place must be quiet, look at Southwest and Northeast Harbor, also on Mount Desert Isle with Bar Harbor. I stayed in a B&B on Freeman Ridge in Southwest Harbor, the view was amazing overlooking all the islands, Somes Sound and the sailboats in the distance. The B&B was average, but the view and location were amazing. It was a short, pretty drive to Bar Harbor.

Camden......on our way up there almost 8 years ago you pass the Maine State prison which operated a gift shop.....all those over priced bird houses etc down in Booth Bay...well we got them for a fraction of the cost at the Maine State Prison gift shop....mine are still hanging in my trees at home...I wonder if it's still open
