So friends, today I met some customers at work, an older gay (male) couple, that been together for over 25 years, that when I told them that I was looking at some properties in ME, in specific at the County, told me that they would love to to live there too, but weren't sure about the acceptance they would have, and were afraid of feeling unwelcomed. I felt at a loss of words (which is rare), and didn't know what to tell them. Gave them the bottle of wine I suggested, and left feeling like a fool. What could I possibly tell them? I don't really know, since I never had to face this situation. But I would like to tell them something next time they come to get more "vino". What shall I say? I don't want to just ramble something untrue in either way. Thought to ask you first...

Like everything in life it depends. There are people in Maine ( as there are everywhere else ) who will dislike your lifestyle. Like everywhere else there will always be some who will hate you and others who will accept you.

In Maine there are two types of people. Those from here and those not from here. Either way the vast majorities of Mainers don't care about much else LOL..

Maineguy04654 is absolutely right. If you're from away, locals will be a tad skeptical until you show some sign that you're not a jerk. After that, "you're in".
All the other things about people.........doesn't really enter the equation.
End of story.

I am not sure which County you're speaking of but I can tell you that there are wonderful, dedicated people working for equality for all Maine families throughout the state. If I could be of assistance to them in anyway, they shouldn't hesitate to contact me.

Anytime I've known of somebody referring to The County (you know, when you can just hear the capital letters and bold in the voice), it has always meant Aroostook.

Yea he is one of those here to teach us acceptance cause we are ignorant country folks.

If he was from here He would have known what "the county" was as every Mainer does. He would have also known that the vast majority of Mainers do not care about anything about what you are as long as you are not here to try to change us.

It's true that there are a lot of intolerant people in Maine - like everywhere - but there are a lot of great, understanding and open people, too. If they're interested in moving away from the big cities like Portland, tell them to look for communities that are welcoming, towns that have Unitarian Universalist Churches (Related Organizations - Northern New England District - Unitarian Universalist Association) or UCC churches, etc. There's also things like cohousing (Belfast Cohousing comes to mind - Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage) and other interesting neighborhood concepts that tend to be more welcoming than some backwoods or small town communities.

I am a Unitarian-Universalist and I agree that is a great way to meet liberal minded and welcoming people all over Maine. Maine has so many UU congregations....and they are a way to meet progressive, liberal...well educated, artistic people..all over the state. Part of the history of Maine has been its acceptance of divergent points of view....and the UU congregations continue that historical tradition.
