The big debate is the Mountain Lions. Having lived here for 5 years (yes, I am 'from away'), I have seen one. It was on the side of the highway by exit 157. There are folks here who will debate me till they are blue in the face, but my brother in law and I saw it as plain as day. I think the wildlife critters are more plentiful the farther north you go.

We saw a BIG black cat (Panther?) outside of Greenville in 2003. Saw it as plain as day but no one believed us either. It had a rabbit in it's mouth and was trotting down the side of the road near Katahdin Iron works. We know what we saw. We were told it was a mutant ,miscolored Bobcat but it was much bigger than a bobcat or a Lynx and far too big to be a fisher..??

I had three guys hunting turkeys out back this morning. There were eight birds but only two toms. They got a nice tom. The'll be back in a few days I'm sure.

The other big debate is timber wolves. Several have turned up in the past few years, but the usual explanation is that they were "released pets." But there are folks in northern Maine who swear wolves are now residents in the deep woods.

Siobjaun, a lot of people got a good laugh back in March when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared there are no longer any wild populations of mountain lions in the eastern United States. Their researchers said the subspecies has probably been extinct since the 1930s.

We had a skunk pass across our back yard nightly all winter long.. We live on a city lot. Have been feeding peanuts to a couple squirrels on my front porch railing. The same one comes back daily. I can tell because his right ear is split in two.

Brushed a porcupine on the way back from BOS Fri night, pulled about 2 dozen quills out of the tire this evening. Sat afternoon, pair of hawks circling the field. This evening, turkeys in the woods on the far side of the field, could hear them but couldn't see them.

logging, the wood industry is big business in maine, if a mountain lion is officially acknowledged, then im sure it would be a protected species, and the habitat (huge tracts of lands) would probly also be protected- every feel good enviro whacko club on the east coast would be lobbying to "protect" the habitat
