Answers to 4-6-7 coming from a 20-something who loves metal and frequently visits Maine:

Most 20 & young 30 somethings in lower to midcoast Maine do not listen exclusively to country--they primarily listen to rock/indie and some popular music. There's a small metal scene in Portland but you'll have to search it out. On the plus side, if you live on the coast between New Hampshire and Portland, you can jump on the train to Boston and be in the most metal-friendly city in America. If you live north of Portland, odds are that most 20-somethings are comfortable with country music even if they're not crazy about it. Also, give it a chance. Jamey Johnson is pretty d*mn metal when you look at what he's singing about.

I doubt anyone would notice your lack of an accent let alone care about it. Heck, even when I'm up near Canada I barely hear the "Maine accent" that people talk about so much.

Go with Portland for the degree; if you're really looking for an alternative crowd to hang out with it will be hard to find in Bangor. On the coast, close to Mass., multiple colleges to choose from, most job opportunities, etc. Not the best place as far as politics and raising a family go, but at your age you may not be thinking about that.

Whoa, just did a quick search and found that this plays on Portland's public access channels: Musical Mayhem (Maine-Metal-Host Anne delivers the latest GLOBAL and LOCAL METAL VIDEOS to YOU every WEEK) on Vimeo Metal is more prominent (and probably more underground) in Portland than I thought!

Long live metal!
