... and August is in question this year. LOL

Actually, I would not call this "winter" as there ARE things growing, producing, blooming and so on in my garden which is NOT under plastic or glass.

Peas by the 4th, for sure!

I've heard this numerous times, but I've never quite understood the comment. Having been downeast in obviously winter, obviously fall with leaf changing, obviously spring, and of course summer, this must be something that is either implying something else, or the speaker must live near the Canadian border.

Perhaps some real Mainiac could enlighten me.

This statement has been made of several northern locations where I have lived. It refers, I believe, to the speaker's or writer's desire for many months of weather that consists of heat and sunshine (aka "summer") which perhaps they think should start with the make-believe "start of the summer BBQ season" on Memorial Day weekend and continue, unremitting, until Labor Day. In this mindset, spring and autumn do not exist, as they do not contribute reliable weather for going to the beach.

Now, I am not a "real Mainiac" but this is what I understood to be meant by folks who make the same statement regarding Michigan, where I was born, and Wisconsin, where I lived for many years. Might be different in Maine, but I doubt it. It is, however, often said in jest, especially when the summertime temperatures hover near the levels I prefer (below 80 degrees.)

That sure wouldn't deter me... I love a cool Summer, and certainly don't mind a cold and cozy winter!
Well... Maybe not too long of a cozy winter...
