I guess we all just love Maine. It's hard to not talk about a place that is so wonderful. Plus, as a rule, Mainers tend to talk a lot... There's so much to say, you know?

Try looking at the NY forum. This one looks like a ghost town in comparrison. People get a right bit touchy over there too.

My husband and I first visited Maine in 1999 and absolutely fell in love with the scenic beauty, the serenity, the climate, and the people. Where I live is supposed to be "the heartland", but I found the people in Maine to be so much kinder and more friendly. I read "Down East" and "Yankee" and feel homesick - although I've never lived in New England. If we could just find jobs, we'd be out of here asap.

I agree with the nature of people in Maine. We're supposed to be known for "southern hospitality" in the south. I think that concept died at the turn of the century.
It was so sad to DH and I when we were in Maine and the kindness of people was so foreign to us. Our 6 yo daughter even asked at one point why people were being so nice to us. Now, what does that say for the environment they are growing up in CURRENTLY? We hated coming home to all the hateful people we're used to around here and are SO anxious to get back to "the friendly state".

People in Maine could not believe we have road rage and that schools have metal detectors here in the Midwest. Even common civilities are a source of consternation. A few months ago I was at the grocery store and, as I had a huge cart load of stuff, offered the woman behind me with only a few items to go ahead of me. She pulled herself upright and said said "Why no. I'll just wait my turn like everyone else". The expression on her face was one of absolute disdain. I felt like I'd been smacked. This has happened a few times since (not with the same woman), so I've learned not offer again.
The local newspaper used to have a section where people could call in and leave a message which would be published. There were loads of comments from people passing through who had stopped in our town and called to comment on how rude people were - even wait staff and shop owners. Nice.
I remember seven years ago after we had to have our first bichon put to sleep we were in Freeport. A elderly couple came by with a black poodle, and of course I had to go over and pet it - which brought on tears over our loss. These dear people stood on the street with us for over thirty minutes and consoled me - and even cried with me! And we were complete strangers...
Wow.

I do not consider myself to be un-employed.
I have a pension, and a few businesses that each do a little.
