Not sure what caused it, and it was late fall so we never saw any bugs  The logs were skidded by horse and if I can ever find those photo's I'll post them.

A rotten balsam fir tree. The heart wood has rotted away leaving the knot wood from the branched pointing to the center. Each of those points is a branch when the tree was young.
