I've been contemplating moving back to Maine, after living here in the midwest for a year or two now. Big city life has been enjoyable, but I'm itching to get back to the east coast.

The downside: I currently work as a web developer here in Chicago. Web dev is absolutely BOOMING here right now; I can find a handful of jobs and get callbacks/interviews within a few days' time if I put some effort into it.

I'd imagine Maine (and Portland in particular) are significantly more stagnant on the web development job front.

I've gotten hold of a few friends and contacts that work in this field and live in Maine, and they have all assured me that the job market isn't as bleak as I'd think, which is reassuring. But compared to Chicago, I'm sure any other market will seem miniscule right now.

Anyone here work in web development, programming, or an IT-related field in Maine? What are your views on the state of employment in such fields?

(For reference if any other web devs see this, I'm primarily a Python/Django and Javascript dev.)

its exactly what your friends say. Its not as bad as you think. We just hired an additional web developer so no openings at my company at the moment except SQA. Try portland webworks, LLbean and vertafore also you'll get a much better picture of who's in the area by visiting Welcome to the Technology Association of Maine | TechMaine - The Technology Association of Maine.

hxcobd, are you on Twitter? There are several different groups that get together for breakfast or Sunday evenings. If you're not, get on and follow/re-tweet some and you'll be networked in no time.

Most of the companies I know in Maine dont place much value on good web design.

From personal experience, most of the people I know who are in charge of their companies web page do other jobs in the company (receptionist, shipping dept, guy who knows the most about computers) and update the web site as needed. I have rarely ever seen a dedicated web developer at a company in Maine.

Owners of companies in Maine just dont place much value on their web site. They hate paying someone to update it so many sites are out of date or they do it themselves. Its just the yankee mentality.

Most web developers I know, do it at nights when they are not working their full time job (not web development) during the day. I dont know anyone who does it for full time income.

My advice? Dont move here unless you get a job first.
