House give-away contest
Found this on craigslist: The Official Win My House Website (broken link). For a $100 entry fee and a 250 word essay, you're entered to win a house by Sanford. The ad states that at least 3000 entries have to be received. Just thought this was interesting. It's a pretty creative way to sell a house!

This technique was used alot during the last big recession in Maine when home sales slowed tremendously (1987, I believe). Seems unique to Maine
Remember though, the owners will only make good on their promise if that magic number of 3000 entries is met. That way, they have "sold" their home for the grand price of $300,000. With all the real estate for sale in Maine right now, I doubt they will receive 3,000 submissions. The essay is irrelevant- only the exact required number of submissions accompanied by the $100 is what counts in this transaction!

I had never heard of anyone doing this. Nice house..little more "subdivisiony" , if you will, then we were looking at. Also we were looking for more right on the coast. This however, is food for thought. If we could win this, we could sell here and since we are of simple means, most likely take lower paying jobs up there instead of waiting to move in 14 years (the planned early retirement). Plus, the husband is a huge Bruins fan!

We just got back from Maine and saw a similar "offer" advertising a way to own your own restaurant. For a $100 fee and an essay about why you want to own a restaurant you enter into a drawing etc.
Seems quasi-legal to me...I mean what if 2000 people send in essays?.... - that's a nice chunk of change to not be refunded. Be careful out there folks.

I was wondering about meeting the minumum number of entries, too. Although if I remember the rules correctly, I think it stated that if less than 3000 entries were received, they would still pick a name and the winner would recieve the entry money the seller received, minus advertising costs. But there's no way of knowing how many entries they actually received. Oh well, I thought it was an interesting idea. You know what they say about something that's too good to be true...

Actually, in this case, as in many others like it, if the contest does not collect the number of entries it seeks the winner gets all of the monies collected minus the cost of promoting the contest. So even if there are only 2000 entries, your looking at a pretty nice check, minus Uncle Sam's of course.
I've seen this work before. Good luck to all.

And if you win the house, Uncle is going to want to collect an income tax on the value.

Home Giveaway Contest, GREAT IDEA
Living in the state of California this is a perfect way to go with all the foreclosures .... the problem I see is the entry fee. The lower the fee the more entries it would take but more feasible for most these days. I have a home in Minnesota I'm thinking of doing this way . What do you think a reasonable fee would be ??

Be sure to check what your State "Gaming" laws are. This would fall under a lottery and most States want their piece of the action. Wouldn't want to PO that bunch personally.
