I live in the Portland area right now (I have been for a year), in a regular apartment. I'm looking for a house to rent in the $1000-1100 range, but I'm not really sure where to start. Craigslist and 4mainerentals are the best I've found. Are there more listings, newspapers I should check out, or neighborhoods in particular I should drive around to look? Thanks!

No matter where you rent from, especially Craigslist, be careful of scams.

There's a site that can check a place out for you once you've found one called CheckYourLandlord.com.

I'm looking on Craigslist, and Boothbay Register and Quoddy Tides newspapers. I find most of the realtors i've looked at have only Winter rentals - i dont want to move again come Summer

Another thread has some ideas, also. Good luck.

Are you looking in Portland and this area? I've found that craigslist is the best place (if the ad only says "Maine" without a town, it's %99 a scam).

You can also try Trulia and Zillow -- they have small rental sections.

Drinan Properties has several single family homes, and Santoro Real Estate has some. The Fishman Realty group has very limited homes rigt now but it's worth checking out at times. All three of those places advertise on CL though.

The rental market is tight right now, at least in Portland. I had one owner tell me he's had people overbidding to get a place recently.

Yes, Portland and the surrounding areas, preferably within 10-15 minutes of USM/downtown. Is it only going to get worse with time? I can certainly wait a few months. There were some areas near Broadway and Ocean St. in South Portland I liked, but I only saw two houses with for rent signs up.

I do not foresee it getting better anytime soon. I just looked at a place in Cape yesterday and the agent told me that this year he has far fewer rentals available than last because people are not leaving them since many can no longer buy due to foreclosures on previous homes and/or bad credit.

Realtor dot com has a tab for house rentals. There is more on there than I have ever seen, which must be a sign!

While you do need to be careful with Craigslist, it helped me find the best place I ever lived while I was in Miami and someone here reminded me of it when I was getting ready to move and I found a fantastic place from there, as well.

There are scams but I think if you use your wits and some common sense, you can find some real hidden gems on that site. I have twice in a row, now.
