Wind power: attn Boonskyler
Boonskyler,
I saw you post asking about wind speeds. Our next arrogant, egomaniacal president and congress need to get a clue. They're against drilling and nuclear energy and have no plan other than to tell us that we won't get any benefits from drilling for 10 years despite people in the oil industry saying we could be tapping significant oil reserves offshore in a few years. Boone Pickens had to come up with an energy plan. Of course, him being a Republican, they will never admit he's right as they'll try and save face to the last minute until America's evil companies prove them wrong. You don't hear the media talking much about heating oil and propane prices going up winter, just gasoline going up now.
Isn't this a Graham Lake message board?
Anyway, I'm putting in a heat circulating fireplace in the living room and a wood burning furnace hooked up to the ductwork in the cellar of a new home. I'll have a propane furnace but will be cutting and splitting a lot of wood for heat as heating oil and propane prices could easily double by next winter.
I'd like to consider wind power for the electricity, if it's affordable. Have you checked in to the pricing of the equipment and getting the windmill wired to the home? What have you found out?
Thanks

Does anyone have a cottage or trailer to rent on the lake or near it for 1K or so per month in the fall?

The Ellsworth American's classified pages have 91 local rents and I think one of them is on Graham Lake, you can search the site, here's the link:

Good luck

i been looking into an inexpensive way to supply the electric to cabin, it is a challenging task with budget under $10,000 for power system. there was a post on CD about 400 watts windmill disign by Phillip Stark very good looking cost about $600, not out yet don't know it will work efficiently or not. i am wait and see on this one. there are other out there for 1000 watts system cost abot $ 3000-5000.
this is what i am thinking :
a 8-10 kw lp generter cost $ 3000-4000.
2- 400 watts solar panel cost $800-1000.
1- (400-800) watts windmill cost $800-1000 (i think we have wind speed to support it)
10 battary 12 volts 120amph per battary cost $800-1000
what ever else need to set up electricity need for small cabin
i would hope to the set up simlilar to our Airstram unit (12 volts, 110 volts and lp gas)
wood stove for heating.
hey if you need more wood, just come and get them, we are on 179 just south of you.

thinking about moving
Love to read the responses. We have land on the Union River and considering moving there next summer. When we vacation there we never see any kids around and we are wondering if our kids will be isolated. We have 2 teenagers. We currently live in Florida and may be retiring soon after 25 years in the Navy. I am originally from Connecticut and my wife and I want to get out of the rat race and back to a more quiet life. Any suggestions?

Union River in Ellsworth? Or Union River out in the willy wags?
We have a 17 year old boy. He's going into his senior year at Ellsworth High School. He works - two part time jobs this summer. Hangs with a good group of friends, camps, kayaks, bikes, has a black belt in karate. He's a bit of a homebody and happy to walk the dogs, swim and boat with the folks.
Lots of kids work here, out of necessity. And it is quiet here and kids do quiet things. The biggest shopping mall and movie cinema is in Bangor and you don't see kids hanging around the Ellsworth mall and stores much. High school sports, theater and show choir occupy a lot of teen time in Ellsworth.
People here say there is nothing for kids to do and I guess I said it too when I was a kid. What we really mean when we say that (in my opinion) is that there isn't something wildly fun and thrilling to do every minute of the day.
Good luck with your plans.

Lightening on the lake
Wow, it's been a wild few days and a miserable rainy spell on Graham Lake. Sunday's thunderstorm shot to the top of our worst t-storms ever list. We sat on the porch after lunch hoping it would subside in time for us to go to Blue Hill and hear Southern Culture on the Skids but alas it was not to be. Blue Hill flooded: fairgrounds, hospital and roads so we sat on the porch and watched the lightening and felt the earth shake under the house. The doodle laid on my feet, only slightly worried and the baby Chihuahua - Papillion Cross snored on my lap. The fat lady cat took it in from under the wheel barrow and the kitten men watched from the tractor seat in the garage (as manly men are wont to do) with the door wide open.
We've been immersed in such a long, dull stretch of overcast rainy weather. This morning the sky cleared but temps were in the mid 60s with a breeze. I wore a fleece for the 5 a.m. dog walk. It's 5 p.m. and dark clouds are again rolling in.
On the bright side the lake is still quite high, the tomato bushes are loaded - early girls and grapes - and if it gets warm and sunny we'll feast on pasta with fresh tomato sauce til we just pop with delight.

And if the predictions are right we aren't due for any sun unil next Monday. It's turning into one of those damp wet summers we get every few years. Won't be great for the tourism which is hurting from the price of gas as it is. Felt like fall this morning.

Mushrooms
Mushrooms. Everywhere. Brightly, weirdly colored. Tall, short, clusters, singles. Another byproduct of a wet summer. We keep a close eye on the baby dog who thinks they are snacks growing just for him. I can't image that eating them would be good for him. He doesn't know it yet but he's going on a great excursion Saturday. Frenchboro's annual lobster festival! A 16-mile round trip ferry ride. And, we're starting our day at the Rotary pancake breakfast in Ellsworth at 6:30 a.m. We'll be going with granddaughters of Frenchboro natives and one Jack Russell to keep our boy company. I've never been to Frenchboro and I've always wanted to go. At first I was hesitating because of the weather but then I remembered my mantra "life isn't a dress rehearsal". That followed by my dad's reply when we whined about rain "water never hurt a drip" So we're off on Saturday. Even if the weather's bad, the food will be good.

Frenchboro
The trip out to Frenchboro for the annual lobster festival was possibly the best outing I've ever had. 45 minute ferry ride on calm seas in bright sun. A delicious lobster dinner - lobster, cole slaw, rolls and butter and a whopping big piece of blueberry pie. A 3 mile hike around one side of the island. And almost everyone in attendance wanted to talk to Archie! Everyone was SO friendly. We plan to make it an annual outing.
