Default Eagle Watch

A very large eagle sat perched in a gnarly, stunted pine tree on the edge of the heath across the lake last night. We putted out in the boat and watched him through the binoculars for a good 30 minutes as he surveyed his domain. Was he searching for rodents on the heath? Or, looking for fish jumping? Or did he have his eye on the 5 pound Chihuahua-Papillon stationed on the bow of the boat? Luckily his 80 lb big brother was standing next to him. No eagle could make off with the doodle !

Default VERY Big ole fish!

We made a pact that we'd go out on the boat every day that it wasn't raining so set out last night around 5 p.m. in fleece and wool socks. We were putt putting (rocking up and down actually as it was a little rough) out behind the heath when DH went WHOA and started reeling in a real fighter. He coaxed and coaxed and reeled and reeled careful as could be as the dang thing swam up under the boat. Just as he thought he might actually land it - bang! It was gone - hook, line and sinker. I'm not well versed on the language but I think he said he had 80 lb line - anyway he was rigged to get a big one. He thinks it's the biggest fish he's ever hooked in 50+ years of fishing. Fishing's like golf so I'll offer this poem (insert fish if you like)
I hate golf!
I hate golf!!
I hate golf!!!
That was a great shot!
I love golf

You can bet your bippy we'll be out looking for the old man again tonight.

Default Autumn on the Lake

Many of us on Graham were dismayed to wake up one morning last week and find our boats on the beach. After much pushing and shoving we got ours out in the water far enough to get it on the trailer and out of the lake. It's our own fault, really. We enjoyed high lake levels this year and lovely weather so we pushed the envelope. DH assured me we could get it out of the water without me getting wet. HA! I was out waist deep in my running shorts and a wool sweater. Brrrrrr.

Foliage is lovely on the lake and when we sit on the porch looking out over the water and see no boat and no dock we know it's fall at last. The loons still call but the geese are heading south. I'm already thinking about the x-country skiis.

Default the future for Graham Lake

Stumbled onto this thread as I too have property on Graham Lake and enjoy the awesome natural beauty, fishing and all the lake activities, even getting the pontoon out of the mud earlier this month when they opened the dam unexpectedly, however I heard some distressing news of the future intentions to open or remove? the dam. Dropping the water level to the natural flow of the union river bed which feeds through Graham. Comments?

Graham Lake is a hydro electric generation project owned by PPL Maine but in the process of being sold. Since companies pay millions of dollars for these dams for the purpose of generating revenue I don't think they'll br draining the lakes they make a living from. Without the dam on the Union River Ellsworth risks flooding as in the disasterous freshet of 1923. Lake dwellers may be able to influence the maximum and minumum water levels in public hearings that will be scheduled when the license to operate the dam faces renewal which I believe is 12/31/2018.

One of the goals of the envrionazis is to remove all man made structures from all the lakes, rivers and ponds in Maine and most other states. They have succeeded in some places already. They removed one of the only two working bridges from the St John river in North West Maine and dams along the Kennebec in Augusta. Never say never when it comes to these people and don't trust they have your best interests in mind. They are a cult.

That's a topic that will send my husband's bp through the roof. It drives him nuts. Every time he hears about a dam coming out I hear about it for weeks.

Yowzer - we bought a pair of 8 ft. marine whips at Mahden's yesterday for $17.50!! Box was marked $179. Any of you Graham Lakers need whips for your dock there were two boxes left - one pair 14' and one pair of 12'. I think that's the best Marden's find EVER!

We had no clue what a marine whip is, had to google. Hope they hold your boat next year; hear it's been windy and wonder what the lake level is, haven't been over for a while.
