I am looking for towns where there is a good community of artists (visual arts mostly). In North Carolina there is a town I like because they converted an old high school from 1910 into artist studios. Is there anything like that in Maine? What about the art scene in Portland? What about the smaller towns?

Portsmouth, NH has what your describing. Old warehouse (button factory) turned into artist studios. And 10 min from Portsmouth, is Rollinsford, NH which has artist studios in an textile factory.

Blue Hills, Rockport and Monhegan Island are very artsy-fartsy as they have a strong artist community.

I heard that most of them are leaving Eastport. Not enough tourist money.
