On our way to NH on Friday we decided to stop off for lunch in the Old Port and see the cruise ship "du jour" and it was the Queen Elizabeth. She is gorgeous. The passengers can disembark right on a gangplank as there is no need for tenders, so we got a good close up look. Ate lunch at a little restaurant, right there on Commercial Street, called Olives. It was ok. On our way home from NH the next day we drove out to Wells Beach for a walk on the beach. The tide was way out and there were lots of folks on the beach for a kind of gray day. There were even about a dozen or so in the water, so I guess the water temp must have been good for swimming. The sun broke through for us while we were having our walk.

The water has been unusually warm all the way up to the Kennebec all summer. However, downeast of the Kennebec the water temp dropped off precipitously.

Sounds like you had a nice trip! And you set a good example to armchair day travelers like myself...lots of interesting sights and experiences to be had close to home!

I think I saw QE2 in Halifax 20+ years ago. I was working on a boat and we were in Halifax Harbor when she made her first visit there. Ginormous, and I recall, as you said, that it was very moving to see her. We motored over as close as we dared.

I begged my way on the old QE2 about 20 years ago. It came into Bar Harbor and our MDI reporter had a press pass and I tagged along as the camera shlepper . What a boat! And what a great boost to the local economy.

We passed by the QE2 the other day, which got me in to a days long conversation with my kids about the Titanic. My 5yo son is desperate to see the movie. Now I need to find something not as inappropriate for his age that he will accept as a substitute.

I would imagine that the ship the OP was referring to was actually the Queen Mary II.

Mr. Joshua, you imagine well! QE2's itinerary shows her elsewhere; but Queen Mary is on a tour of New England & Canadian waters as we speak. Whatever, they're both amazing ships.

It's pretty cool that such a class act would seek the Maine coast out for a destination voyage!

The QE made her Bar Harbor debut on September 24. The QM is scheduled to make her port call in Bar Harbor on October 6
