Figured if anyone knows, Mainers would know. Looking for some of your favorite ways to cook the roast in a crock pot. If you have a different way to cook the deer roast, I open for suggestions. Thanks in advance from the west coast!

Well, I have successfully cooled elk meat in the crock pot, Perhaps the recipe works for venison as well?

Soak game 12 - 24 hours hours in buttermilk
( I make my own- add just a few tblsps of vinegar to milk) Turn several times

Chop up 3 onions and 1 head of garlic ( yes , a complete head!!!)
Saute in a bit of olive oil till soft and onions are opaque
Add game( drained of buttermilk)
Add several shakes of Worcestershire sauce, a bay leaf, salt, pepeer and several shakes of Mrs. Dash. Stir and cook on high in the crock pot overnight and then stir and lower to low for 4 more hours. Serve with rice. Mmmmm- tasty

Good luck!

A cup of red wine and a couple of onions, carrots and celery. Add a pound of parsnips and they impart a sweetness that can't be beat.

I add red wine also. It will work with Elk, Mulie or White Tail meat.

Parsnips sound delightful with game.
Thanks for the suggestion

What does soaking in red wine or buttermilk do? The neighbor's son has brought home like 4 deer in the last two days. He brought us a small doe he caught and told hubby he'd help him 'dress it'. Now, I'm the biggest baby when it comes to any animal, so I can't play part in it. I don't like venison anyway, so it's not bothering me. (Maybe it was prepared wrong when I had it?) But hubby loves it. The only time he's ever eaten it though was when someone else did all the work.

So, we've got 100 pounds or so of meat in the fridge waiting for him to figure out how you're supposed to properly cut it up. He gave up and chopped a bunch up and tossed it in the crock pot a couple nights ago. He said it was good but tasted a bit 'gamey'? We've got a big buck that's at the processing place that should be back in a few days all packaged up. But we have no clue how to prepare it from there......

Any tips would be great. And I'm hoping soaking in red wine or buttermilk removes the gamey taste??

Default the new crock pot

A brown'n bag trumps a crock pot.
A good cook who understands meats, trumps any cooking vessel.
Time to put in a venison roast...thanks to mouthwatering suggestions
........ good idea!

Soaking in buttermilk, wine, or citrus helps break down the collagen in the meat and tenderizes it. The enzymes in buttermilk also "sweeten" the meat and reduces any gamey flavor.
I once had some chunks of venison, like large pieces of stew meat that a friend gave me. I cooked them in a pot of baked beans (in the crockpot). It was very tender and sweet.

Hmmm. I'll have to try that. Maybe I'll like venison if it's less gamey tasting. Brad loves deer chili that they make around here. He says I'm crazy that I don't like it. Sorry!
