Length of Winter
Alright, important question.
When does spring start and fall end?
In jersey, it starts warming up and getting green in mid to late april.
Leaves begin to fall in october and it starts getting cold..frost begins in november.
So what about Maine? Does it start to warm up in june and start to get cold in august like everyone makes it out to be??
Wouldnt Maine have longer summers than lets say new york state, pennsylanvia, or any midwest state????
Wouldnt the winters be more tame than inland states as well??
please clarify Maine's winters for me.

On the city-data.com maine site, you can look up any US city and get this info toward the bottom of the page. There are snowfall and rainfall charts as well. This one is for Portland just to give you an example. This is good info, if it just accurate. Sometimes you can't tell about what you read online, except by talking to these folks who actually live it.
Ok, I know I don't actually live there *yet* but I do my homework!

Where I live it is zone 5.
So in terms of crops and plants they will never see any extended cold to exceed -10 for greater than a week.
We get wind, rain, snow and ice.
I would consider winters here to be fairly mild.

Well, the winters in Maine are not too bad for the most part.
However, Maine is located at the far edge of the Eastern Time Zone
That means that the sun sets very early in the winter.. (4PM)
The mountains also play tricks with the amount of daylight you receive in the afternoon (western Maine)
I was traveling in interior Maine and it started getting dark around 3:30 PM with sharp shadows because of the mountains.
Coastal Maine is generally much milder than interior Maine
Aroostook County has the coldest winter temperatures of any area in Maine.

Compared to NJ you are going to lose about 3 weeks to a month on either end. That has been my experience. Maine can have a frost the first week of aug but have a heat wave in sept.
I like the change of seasons and especially the long summer days. On the flipside i do not like short winter days and long periods of clouds and rain.

winter flies like a dream filled night, you hold your quilts and pillow tight, with spring we waken, stretch and yawn, summer's here, then soon long gone, embrace the fall, It's colors bright, I'll be home soon, to winters white.......
Can't sleep!! so much to do, so excited, but dreading the actual move lol.
And so to all, I wish you well, I'll be back soon my tale to tell

Depends this past winter did not end till the middle of April Winter of 05-06 was quite mild the last storm was 3-11 and that did not amount to much. The temp is what can get ya. 40 one day then -20 the next As commented earlier Aroostook county is generally the coldest. I live west of Bangor not the coldest but cold enough. Cant wait till our house sells. 40 years is enough

I think you'll love the seasons, and the winters won't be nearly as bad as you may have heard!
