Not true. Would it be acceptable not to have speed limits and allow drivers to make their own choices as to what speed they travel. Why even have stop signs and traffic lights if we can accept all accidents are caused be people's poor driving habits or poor ability.
These are all tools to help our roads safer and easier to travel. There will always be some inherent level of danger just for leaving your house. The idea is to make reasonable accomodations to manage how much danger we want to accept. Adding a four way stop, or traffic light shouldn't take years of studies. Too many people dying in avoidable accidents when measured against the cost of fixing the problem.

Speaking of poor maintainance...there are some stretches of 95 between Augusta and Houlton that the right lane is so rutted it *is* dangerous.

The state has added rumble strips to sections of route 4. This is a "test" to see if it reduces the number of accidents. The road design itself is fine in that its a well maintained road and is heavily traveled (main route to the paper mills and ski areas). People think because of this that they can drive like a bat outta heck! Drive it sometime and you will see what Cessna and I are talking about.

Hey Al, When I do travel the section coming out of Auburn into Turner it is designed like a freeway. Wide, 4 lanes. not necessarily residential, and most traffic is through traffic so I think people not paying attention just scream through there. You can run traffic details out there all you want but people are still going to abuse it. Put a median in and stop cross traffic, at least in the 2 lane section of Auburn and Turner and add some lights.

LOL. Not on your life. My daughter did work last summer as a flagger and loved it. My hubby has worked in construction since he was 21 yrs old. He started out at H.E. Sargent in Stillwater as a mechanic, now he works at Cat in Scarborough in field service and is head of their paving division.
Pre daughter I used to go with him in the summers when he was working all over the state. Spent two summers in Island Falls and a month in Millinocket and a couple of weeks in Machias. He would work while I got to laze around in a campground all day.
