I drove five miles an hour over the speed limit on my way home from work last night. Does that count?

Absolutely. You should be horsewhipped on the town common then placed in stocks for 24 hours, followed by a 30 day jail term. During those 30 days you will be forced to listen 24/7 to recordings of lttt lecturing about the pervasiveness of crime in Maine.

I live in NYC. I work in Bklyn as a parole officer.
I've been to Portland, once. It was a very very nice city and I felt super safe.
You wanna see unsafe, ride around the hood in Brooklyn with me for a day.
Methinks Maine is a sweet place to live.

Sorry to hear about your high crime rate .How many people are in Brooklyn? How many people are in Portland? People need to take in consideration the population of a town before they start comparing. Maine has more than it's share of crime compared to other cities in other states . Example Portland has 61,982 people. Brooklin New York has 2,465,326 people. So of course Brooklyn probably does have more crime because it has way more people!! I live in Maine and have for 43 of my 52 year,s of my life so I know the crime that is publisized and the crime that get's swept under the carpet.Visiting Maine is not going to give you the real take on Maine. You have to live here about 5 year,s then you will get it. Have a great day

I lived in Maine for over 30 years and not sure what you are talking about? Even the stats don't show that Maine has a high crime rate? It sounds like you are looking for reasons to put Maine down? If so, why not move..it is a big world out there.
You are welcome to come spend a week in NC and than we'll discuss crime.

Hey, LTTT, I've got some ACTUAL stats for you. Yes, the population size counts when you're talking crime rates, and where there are more people, there is obviously more crime to report. But, the indexes are figured on an incedents/100,000 people basis, so here ya go. The word you're looking for is "index".
Caribou pop. 8312 median income $32K crime index 163
Belfast pop. 6803 median income $34K crime index 234
Portland pop. 63,000 median income $40K crime index 365
My Town, TX pop. 8046 median income $20K crime index 624
*amn! Maybe I need to move to Caribou!! So far in my research, you have the LOWEST crime rate!

This is too easy. Lttt just keeps reinforcing how crime free Maine is. Let's see here.
Let's use murders, since they're much harder to sweep under lttt's carpet. In 2005 Brooklyn, NY, had 211 homicides. That's one murder for every 11,684 residents. Maine had 19 homicides among a population of 1,321,574, or one killing per 69,556 residents. So Brooklyn has a homicide rate SIX TIMES that of the entire state of Maine. Omigawd I feel so threatened sitting here in Maine I can hardly stand it.
Or let's look at it another way. Brooklyn -- 81.8 square miles in size -- had 2.6 homicides per square mile. Maine, with 35,387 square miles, had .00054 murders per square mile. This is so cool. Brooklyn's per-square-mile homicide rate is 4,814 times that of Maine.

Prove it. You're awfully long on talk and short on facts there, bubba.
Pathetic. Amusing, but pathetic.

I have the answer!
Lttt is actually the director of the Caribou Chamber of Commerce, and he's making these dumb claims so the rest of us will rebut them and show what a great place Caribou is so readers will be encouraged to move there. It's a brilliant marketing ploy! Lttt, my hat's off to you. This is real viral marketing in the best tradition of the Internet.
