Granted I have only been in Maine for three years, though others who are Maine natives seem to disagree with you.

Yes, I said the other day it's probably just his/her attempt to use reverse psychology on us! Now, I'm sure of it!!

... In 2005 Brooklyn, NY, had 211 homicides. That's one murder for every 11,684 residents. Maine had 19 homicides among a population of 1,321,574, or one killing per 69,556 residents. So Brooklyn has a homicide rate SIX TIMES that of the entire state of Maine. Omigawd I feel so threatened sitting here in Maine I can hardly stand it.

... Or let's look at it another way. Brooklyn -- 81.8 square miles in size -- had 2.6 homicides per square mile. Maine, with 35,387 square miles, had .00054 murders per square mile. This is so cool. Brooklyn's per-square-mile homicide rate is 4,814 times that of Maine.

Let's use murders, since they're much harder to sweep under lttt's carpet. In 2005 Brooklyn, NY, had 211 homicides. That's one murder for every 11,684 residents. Prove it. You're awfully long on talk and short on facts there, bubba.
Pathetic. Amusing, but pathetic.

Man, when you put it that way, I'd really better start wearing my bullet resistant vest more often when I'm out and about in Bklyn!
I had an oppty to live in Portland once but turned it down because I thought I'd miss the excitement/craziness of "da hood". Now I wonder if I made the right decision. Oh well, c'est la vie...

Nope not the director of the Chamber of Commerce. Just a person who is concerned about the decline in my town and the State of Maine. And people are reading this 1,900 at last count and I only started this thread about a week and a half ago so people are reading and that's all that matter's to me.I know if I was going to uproot my family I would want to be informed about the good and bad. I figured there are enough people who are talking about the good thing's someone need's to tell the reality of Maine. And again it's not called VACATIONLAND for nothing . Great place to visit but you don't want to live here.

I don't live in Maine, never have. I have lived in NYC all my life. I realize crime is diff. everywhere and there are different forms that crime takes. But here's a little snapshot of Brooklyn, since we've been informally comparing.
The rougher nabes in Bklyn: You look at someone in the eye, you might get stabbed or shot. You rub up against someone accidentally, you might get stabbed or shot. You walk into the "wrong neighborhood", same. You need to walk around like you're not a victim, otherwise, same. We have all the neat gangs - crips, bloods, MS-13, and a host of others too long to mention. Get my drift.
The nicer parts of Bklyn: The above not as prevelant, but the people are still hardened by life here and everyone's ready to fight. And every element from every nabe ends up mingling in other nabes, so there's always cause to be on guard. In short, ya gotta watch your back all the time.
Plus, we've got every other form of crime imaginable. It isn't chaos by any means, but it's always there.
So, if Maine or parts of Maine is anything like the above, then I feel for you. If not, then you live in a nice place.

When we visited Maine for a few weeks we made a point to watch the evening news and read the paper (and crime report). You see, it's unfortunate that the news in my town in FL usually begins with someone that was shot/stabbed/robbed - and most people think my town is nice. We never heard that kind of news for the time we were in Maine. While we were in Maine - we did read that someone stole the neighbors lawn ornament. Oh yeah, another guy was escorted out of a restaurant for being drunk. On the drive home, when approached our home town our local radio station was just broadcasting that a woman's body was found stuffed in a suitcase in the river - kids found it while swimming. LTTT - take a vacation, I understand you aren't happy with what your perceive as your town's degredation...but get out and get some perspective.
