I have to have a Mommy moment and brag a little! BOTH my girls (ages 5 and 6) got student of the month for their first month at school and I get to go to an award ceremony this afternoon! They'll get their picture in the paper. The really cool thing is that my 6 y.o. got it the first month of school last year too. Makes a mommy very proud!
And, of course, I'll post photos later!

Good job!
We didn't have stuff like that when I was a kid, best you could hope for was a gold star. I usually figured I was doing good if I wasn't standing in the corner with a pointed cone on my head. (Not unlike what may be about to happen to me in this forum.)

So, how do women really dress up there? Do I have to wear flannel? Remember that I'm coming from an area of the country where appearance is *almost* EVERYTHING!! Clothing is more for look than function here. The more uncomfortable you are, the more compliments you get!
I bought some boots for our trip up there in March. Two different people (one male, one female) commented on them. Said, simply, "Nice boots!" I knew right then that I'd probably made a rediculous fashion mistake!! I bought them down here - they were made for looks, not function. My feet were freezing and wet most of the time. Last time I'll buy snowboots in Texas!!
So, what can I expect and what should I invest in? Don't want to look like a tourist, ya know!

My wife tried wearing nice dressy shoes to an event in winter. Once.
Her feet froze, and other ladies told her that she need not bother. Wear what is comfortable and warm, everyone understands.

I'm a denim and cotton type of person. I wear a lot of long skirts and sweaters or blouses. I tend to like thick cable knit tights in the winter with comfy low boots and carry some sensible shoes to change into if I'm visiting (so's not to drag in the wet snow or mud).

hi guys....thanks for the good wishes El!
About the warnings, I missed most of that this time around but I will say take heed and be careful. We don't have our MsJL with us any longer and that's why. We don't want to lose any more good, intelligent, contributing members! The best thing? The warnings DO expire!
About clothing....we don't all look like we stepped out of an LL Bean catalog, but there's definitely ways to look nice and be warm! I do have a flannel shirt in my closet, and I have my bean boots But I also have a pair of dressy type warm boots, almost a riding style with a little heel, and a longer dressy style coat. There are beautiful, dressy scarves and gloves too. You just have to decide how much warm, dressy stuff you need or want. Buy quality clothing, more of a classic style, so you can get more than one winter from them. I do own a couple of pair of silk long johns, they're very warm, but I don't need them unless I'm going to be outside for quite a while on a chilly day! I think too if you plan on dressing in a layer or two it's easier. Some people keep their homes very warm, I like mine a little on the cooler side (68ish). If you visit someone and have on a nice blouse/shirt with a sweater, you'll have it made either way Does that help at all?

All very good info. I'm used to dressing up most of the time. Kinda tired of all the hoopla! It will be so nice to relax a little!!
