Shu-ah

We are just a bit South of the Greater metropolitan center of North Argyle.

South of booming city of Howland; North of sprawling giant of Old Town; East of ever growing hamlet of Alton.

I'm North of The Great Gotham, Old Town,... East of the metropolis of Dover/Foxcroft, smack dab in the middle of "Not Much There" Milo

ok, I must be in a particularly bad mood this morning and I'll be glad when the rest of you get on here to get me out of it.

I am becoming increasingly annoyed by the posts from "outta-staters" that answer questions about the $ people make in particular fields, and what's it's like "living" in particular areas!! So often this information isn't even accurate--not even close!! It would be like me going to the Montana forum and posting the incomes and housing expenses for a social worker!! ok.....done my rant.....

Molly -

Do you feel better now?

I do agree with you, however, folks have a pre-set opinion of what Maine is like. They go online to learn more and what they get is a mix.

There are websites where you put in your town/state and your current income and then you say where you are thinking of moving to. Every time those sites will come back saying that after the move everything will cost you more.

We played with one of those sites a few years ago. It was very frustrating, how can every other place be more expensive? Regardless of where you are to start with?

But I think that is what these folks are doing. They are trying to look around, and they are trying to guess what it would cost them to live in 'X'.

I have a saying "if you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you always got." And I think that applies here, as well.

If you are in the habit of living beyond your means... then you will/can do it anywhere. If you move to a place where the cost of living IS less, likely income will be less as well. Or, if not, you will find more to spend it on.

If you are in the habit of living within your means, and you move chances are you will make the necessary adjustments to continue to do so.

y'know, I have been "poor" (my most folks reconing) in a lot of different scenarios... midwest, west, south... country, city, small town... and have decided that is ok with me. There is (for me anyway) a lot you have to do to make the big bucks that doesn't appeal to me. I have also discovered that in many ways it's easier (as in more comfortable) to me to be poor in the country... there are more options (a bigger garden... poultry... rabbits... even hunting...) and more diversions that don't cost $$ -- or that produce something beyond amusement (garden... poultry... rabbits ... LOL). I am more likely to know and trade with my neighbors in the country or a small town than in the city. That has been true for me all along the way, and I expect it will be as true when I get to Maine.

Do you Mainers agree or disagree??
