Hello,

I am in the Navy and will be retiring within 2 years. We have decided on Maine. We are trying to decide just where to move to. If anyone can give me an idea of a great family oriented town/city, that is close enough to employment opportunities.

I am a military police officer (with my IT degree) and My wife is a GS employee (with a degree in Business management).

I appreciate any help that anyone can offer. I know we have a little time, but the time goes fast.

Thank you!

Portland, Augusta, Bangor, and possibly the Presque Isle/Caribou/Ft. Fairfield areas may have opportunities. In any of the areas it is relatively easy to find good living conditions only a short distance from the built-up areas.

Twenty minutes or less driving time can put you outside of the "city" areas and into open country with small towns.

If the wife is a GS with a business degree, you might want to check out DFAS Limestone. I know they are always looking for good people. A nice town close is Fort Fairfield, I really don't care much for Limestone and Caribou, but that is a personal preference and others seem to love the towns. I do know Fort Fairfield is trying hard to address the needs of the school and children of the community better than most other towns around and to me that just speaks highly of an area.

Hello there. I am sure you know that NAS Brunswick is closing here right? It has to be closed Sept 2011. I'm not sure if that makes a difference to you guys or not since a lot of retires tend to retire near bases. So there will be no base, commissary etc. But Maine is beautiful. Where you ever stationed here, how did you decide to retire here?

usnavycop -

Welcome to Maine

Hi, I am ET1(SS) retired. My last tour of duty was 9594 in Naples, I retired in 2001.

NAS Brunswick's clinic was over-whelmed with AD even before the BRAC decision was announced. I was recommended to go on 'Martin's Point' which is a Maine HMO insurance group under-written by Tricare. We have been very happy with Martin's Point.

My wife works for DECA at the commissary in Bangor. Keep in mind that we also have commissaries at each of the USCG stations along the coast.

We also have an AFEES in Bangor.

And Space-A.

We found an area that we really like just North of Bangor, in the township of Argyle.

I have no earthly clue what all FB just said, but I do know that nomatter where in Maine you settle, you will absolutely LOVE it there as long as that kind of life is your heart.

If you don't mind me asking, why did you decide on Maine? I'm assuming you've been there before?

I love Eastport, but the job situation is probably not that great. Hence, why we are waiting until we retire and just visiting for now. Mollysmiles would be able to give you more detail on the area.

There are many small towns around Bangor: Hermon, Levant, Stetson, Kenduskeag. If you call the local town office, they can give you an idea of what sorts of things go on in the town. Happy retiring!

DFAS is at Limestone and they are expanding. Plent of work there in the IT field also. It's low cost living, but you must love the outdoors because that's about all there is to do.

Actually the IT department is only 3 people, with 2 doing the actual IT work. They are sub-contractors and not hired by DFAS Limestone. I actually do a lot of work up there, and one of the IT people is my next door neighbor. They are always looking for extra help, but just not in the IT department.
